Obituary
Wanda Sester, born on March 10th, 1935, in Harrogate, Tennessee, passed away peacefully on July 9th, 2024, at the age of 89.
Wanda was a beloved wife, mother, and friend. She is survived by her devoted spouse of nearly 71 years, John Sester, and their three cherished children: John Jr., Lisa, and Matthew. Wanda’s family was her pride and joy, and she dedicated her life to their happiness and well-being.
Wanda grew up in the mountains of Eastern Kentucky, where she met her loving husband, John. After graduating from Evarts High School in Harlan County, she married John, and they relocated to Dayton, OH, to seek new opportunities and start a family. Initially, Wanda worked at Gallagher’s Drug Store and Thal’s Department Store in downtown Dayton. She then became a preschool teacher at Huber Heights Baptist Church and completed her associate degree in early childhood education from Sinclair Community College. Later, she worked at Citizens Federal in downtown Dayton. Her final place of employment was with Huber Heights City Schools, where she served as a teacher’s aide and later as a clinic aide, working at several elementary schools. Wanda retired from Menlo Park Elementary School after 26 years of dedicated service.
One of Wanda’s most significant accomplishments was researching and writing the “History of Wayne Township” for the bicentennial celebration in 1976. She shared her love of history with many civic individuals in the community, as well as with numerous students within the city’s school system. The proceeds from the sale of the history book funded the purchase of the gazebo, which still stands today in Huber Heights Community Park.
Wanda was a devout Christian, whose faith was the cornerstone of her life. She was an active member of her church, attending services regularly and participating in various church activities and ministries. Wanda’s unwavering faith provided her with strength and guidance throughout her life, and she was known for her compassionate spirit and willingness to help others in their times of need. Her love for God was evident in her daily actions, as she strived to live a life of kindness, generosity, and integrity, inspiring all who knew her.
The family will hold a memorial service to honor Wanda’s life and legacy will be held at North Huber Heights Baptist Church located at 6193 Taylorsville Road, Huber Heights, Ohio 45424 on Friday July 19th at 1pm.
