Obituary

John Robert Imhof died peacefully surrounded by family Sunday, September 22, 2024 at the age of 82 years.
A memorial service will be held for family and friends November 30th, 2024 at Normandy United Methodist Church, 450 West Alex Bell Rd, Dayton OH 45459. Visitation will begin at 10am, and the service will begin at 11am. Lunch will be served following the service in the Fellowship Hall.
John loved to share that he spent 20 years, 3 months and 17 days in the U.S. Air Force, after which they continued to pay him not to show up. He retired in 1983 as a Major.
He was outgoing and had lots of stories to share. He had a great sense of humor and was always quick with a funny comeback. He would strike up conversations easily, and made sure no one he met left his company feeling like a stranger. He made a point to treat everyone who came into his home like family.
He saw himself as a “tech geek” and enjoyed discovering new gadgets and learning new technology. He spent his “retired” years working at the help desk for Elder Beerman Department Store (later Bonton).
John loved music, especially classical, big band and marching band music. He enjoyed cross word puzzles, model trains, birds, wildlife, and politics. He loved to travel and was always up for a cross country road trip.
His faith was very important to him. He was a member of Normandy United Methodist Church for over 35 years. He loved deeply and honored his vows always. He enjoyed many volunteer activities, especially Hospice visits honoring military veterans.
John leaves behind his wife Bette with over 60 years of marriage, as well as three adoring children, grand children, siblings, in-laws, nieces, nephews, their children, and countless friends.
He was preceded in death by his mother Violet, his father John, his mother-in-law Min, his father-in-law Holly, his brother-in-law Devon, sister-in-law Dolly, brother-in-law Fred, son-in-law Chris, and many beloved pets.
We give special thanks to the staff for the care he received from Hospice of Dayton and from Fairmont Assisted Living.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Hospice of Dayton.

I’ll miss you, Dad. You and Mom welcomed me into your home and your family immediately and I’ve never forgotten that. Thank you for all of the love, the jokes and laughter, and the support through the years.

  3. Becky Anderson says:

Uncle John, I miss your stories and your humor, your love of pets and of course family. You had an endless source of trivia, a passion for computers, and you made it look easy! You had a knack for being patient with those who were not tech savvy.
I’ll never forget the day you came for a visit in uniform and in my childhood mind I thought you were a police officer!
You never met a stranger and accepted everyone in to our circle – also made sure to introduce everyone at the table to our waitresses, who served you The Nectar of the Gods, Dr. Pepper!

  4. Gwendolen Parsons says:

Miss you Dad. Love you always, I will cherish all the wonderful memories!

To the Imhof family and friends, I send my deepest sympathy! To Mom, Ike and family, Gwen and children, and to Heather and Mike, I lift you up to our Creator and Comforter in my prayers.
Dad, from the very first time I met you, you were loving, gentle, and kind. You and your family ALWAYS made me feel very welcomed and apart of the family. To me, you and Mom quickly became my second set of parents! I will treasure the time I traveled to Ohio with Gwen to get you all moved in, settled, and your new room all decorated. I enjoyed exploring the Air Force Museum with you and your family and hearing about all the planes and your military stories. I will always remember too, that you and Mom, and Gwen, Andrew and Madison celebrated my 50th birthday with me! I will never forget you! You and Mom hold very special place in my heart!
